The ancient Diocese of Elvira dates back to the 3rd century. A titular episcopal see of Granada was established in 1437, and the see was restored as a metropolitan archdiocese in 1492 and was elevated to the rank of a metropolitan archdiocese in 1492, by papal authority under Pope Innocent VIII. Its current suffragan sees are Almería, Cartagena, Guadix, Jaén and Málaga.
